The future of the security industry visits Erfurt – the MDR was there

At first, nobody knew what the four-legged robot was all about. At the end of March, it was already out and about in Erfurt, with the press and private individuals speculating – both on websites and in social media: “Who does the robot belong to? And what is it doing in front of Erfurt Cathedral?” were the questions of the hour. Some users even suspected that he was checking whether demo participants in the vicinity were wearing their mouth-nose coverings correctly. Of course it didn’t – the robot was already on a test tour with its human colleagues from CIBORIUS, who guided it down the cathedral steps by remote control. The photo above this press release was selected by the German Press Agency (dpa) as “Picture of the day”. The subsequent media response was correspondingly huge, with international newspapers and news portals picking up on the likeable photo. MDR was able to be present when the four-legged robot was subsequently presented to the customer MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group.

The four-legged robot was developed and built by the US company Boston Dynamics. CIBORIUS has now brought him to Germany to offer his services throughout Europe to companies in many sectors. The chemical, automotive and logistics sectors are particularly interested. Your highly sensitive areas need reliable protection, which the four-legged robot provides: Thanks to the state-of-the-art technology on board, it can also detect what the human eye misses. What’s more, he doesn’t get sick and never has a bad day. Its use also creates more resources elsewhere – the flesh-and-blood colleagues can be deployed where more responsibility and human thinking are required. Robots are a great opportunity for the security industry – and this deployment of the four-legged robot in Erfurt will certainly not be the last.

The four-legged robot can – as in Erfurt – be accompanied by human colleagues or be used completely autonomously for security and property protection. He has also demonstrated his measuring skills on oil rigs and even in Chernobyl. CIBORIUS equips it with the appropriate software and hardware for its applications. This includes thermal imaging cameras as well as highly sensitive sensors. Robots are a great opportunity for the security industry – and this deployment of the four-legged robot in Erfurt will certainly not be the last.
